When Should a Home Be Rewired?

Rewiring is a significant project. These are the situations where it is worth considering, and when targeted updates are enough.

Rewiring a home is a bigger project than most electrical repairs, so it helps to know when it is genuinely needed and when smaller updates will do the job.

Signs rewiring may be worth discussing

  • Wiring insulation that is brittle, cracked or damaged
  • Ungrounded two-prong outlets throughout the house
  • Frequent electrical problems in many rooms rather than one
  • Outlets and switches that run warm
  • Previous DIY work you are not confident in
  • A renovation that changes how rooms are used

Full rewire or targeted updates?

Not every older home needs a full rewire. Sometimes the right answer is adding grounded circuits in key rooms, replacing a damaged section, or adding dedicated circuits for the kitchen or laundry. An inspection is how you find out which applies to your home.

The best time to rewire

If you are already renovating, rewiring while walls and ceilings are open is far less disruptive and usually less expensive than doing it later. Bring an electrician in during planning, not after the drywall is up.

What the process looks like

Rewiring is usually done in sections, so much of the home keeps power while work is underway. Expect a walkthrough, a written scope and estimate, and an agreed schedule before work begins.
